About Holstein Switzerland Nature Park

Holstein Switzerland Nature Park (Naturpark Holsteinische Schweiz) is located in the northeastern part of Schleswig-Holstein, Germany's northernmost state. This nature park encompasses a unique glacial landscape shaped during the last Ice Age, featuring a rich topography of hills reaching up to 168 meters, crystal-clear lakes like the Großer Plöner See and Kellersee, dense forests, and fertile meadows. The park's mosaic of habitats supports a diverse flora and fauna, including rare bird species such as white-tailed eagles and black storks. Rich in cultural heritage, the area is dotted with historic castles, manor houses, and traditional villages, reflecting centuries of human settlement harmoniously coexisting with nature. Outdoor enthusiasts are drawn by an extensive network of hiking and biking trails, the popular E1 European long-distance path runs through parts of the park, and numerous water sports opportunities abound on its pristine lakes. Key landmarks include Schloss Eutin, the historic summer residence of the Dukes of Schleswig-Holstein, and the Bungsberg, the highest natural point in Schleswig-Holstein offering panoramic views. The park promotes sustainable tourism and environmental education, combining natural beauty with cultural richness, making it a favored destination for visitors seeking tranquility, active recreation, and the unique charm of northern Germany's lake district.
